MIDVALE — Police have identified the 16-year-old killed in a collision with a parked semitrailer Saturday as Elijah Exodus Bustamante-Martínez, of Midvale.
A news release Monday from the Unified Police Department also named the 19-year-old passenger who was injured in the crash. Donny Gabriel Castro Hernandez remains in critical condition, police said.
Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race said an SUV traveling west on Fort Union Boulevard collided with the trailer at 12:48 p.m. Saturday in the area of 7200 South and 800 East. Race said the driver "swerved to miss another vehicle and lost control on the wet roads," causing the collision.
Bustamante-Martínez, who was initially identified as being 17 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene, she said, while Hernandez was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Fort Union southbound to 900 East was shut down to investigate the crash, Race added.
Midvale Mayor Dustin Gettel released a statement sharing "condolences and unwavering support during this time of unimaginable sorrow."
"Let's come together as a community, lean on one another, and cherish every moment we have with those we love," Gettel said. "Hold them close and never take a single day for granted."
Bustamante-Martínez's family set up a GoFundMe* account to help the family cover funeral services, which described the boy as "a remarkable 16-year-old student at Hillcrest High School whose light touched countless lives." He is survived by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Bustamante-Martínez served on the Youth Council for the Midvale Mayor's Office and "dreamed of attending the University of Utah and Harvard, serving a full-time mission and joining the military," according to the GoFundMe.
The Canyons School District is offering counseling resources to Hillcrest High School students and their families, according to Gettel.
