LAKE MICHIGAN – Winter weather can create all kinds of wonders on a lake, including thundersnow, seiches, frostflowers, steam devils and ice spikes, to name a few.
Even the names are amazing if you've never experienced them in real life. "Thundersnow" sounds like a classic Bond movie set in the Alps. And "ice spikes" sound like terrifying weapons used by mercenaries on the planet Hoth.
One more name we can add to the list is "ice pancakes." While not as evocative as "frostflowers" or "steam devils," the name is certainly descriptive. If someone told me that ice pancakes were floating on the pond near my house, I'd simply assume there were flat, circles of ice on the water.
On the other hand, if that same person told me "steam devils" were on the pond, I'd probably assume my neighbor was under the influence of a narcotic. This video gives us all a chance to see what ice pancakes look like.
I love the beautiful colors in this wintry scene. The dark water perfectly highlights the frosty edges of the pancakes.
Watching these ice pancakes gently rock with the motion of the water is mesmerizing. Also, it makes me hungry. Guess my family is having breakfast for dinner tonight.
