ST. GEORGE — The newest addition to the Southern Utah University police force is a young black Labrador named Thunder.
Thunder will specialize in detecting explosives and firearms, his handler SUU police officer Marshall Gunter said, noting that this will enable SUU police to provide a better level of security at events such as sports games, concerts, conferences, the Utah Summer Games and commencement exercises.
"For us to add that heightened security, where people can have a little more comfort and be like, 'OK, we know that bomb dogs are here and know that they searched this area,'" Gunter said.
SUU Police Chief Carlos Medina said that extra peace of mind will also help SUU students stay focused on their studies.
