SPANISH FORK — One person was killed and at least four others injured in a multi-vehicle collision in Spanish Fork Canyon on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the fatality, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Eddie Wright said two people were in critical condition and at least two people sustained less serious injuries in the crash.

The collision occurred near Diamond Fork Road on U.S. Highway 6 at 2:16 p.m.

According to a statement from UHP, the driver of an eastbound black Kia Soul lost control and struck a westbound white Kia Sportage. An oncoming Kia Telluride then struck the Kia Soul head-on, throwing the Telluride's backseat passenger from the vehicle.

The backseat passenger in the Telluride was apparently not wearing a seat belt, the statement says, and was pronounced dead on scene.

Troopers said the Soul driver and front-seat passenger both sustained injuries, while "multiple occupants" of the Sportage had minor injuries, and all were transported to a hospital via ambulance.

The other two occupants of the Telluride sustained what the Department said were minor injuries, but were not taken to the hospital. Wright added that a medical helicopter was called to transport those involved but was unable to land due to high winds.

UHP had not released the identity of the person who died Saturday night.

The highway was closed in both directions until about 4:10 p.m. when the Utah Department of Transportation was able to open one lane in each direction.

UDOT has advised drivers to "expect extended delays" and use an alternate route if possible.
