SALT LAKE CITY — Periodically, the state's leadership organization for high school athletics has to make changes.

The Utah High School Activities Association announced Tuesday some proposed changes to its classifications for 2025-27, including the move of several schools up or down a classification based on the number of students that attend each school.

One of the biggest changes in the classification would be the move of Corner Canyon High from 6A to 5A to fit the student body population with similar schools; however, the school has become a powerhouse in football and several other sports in the highest classification.

A drop in classification won't change that fact.

As the proposed changes currently stand, only Corner Canyon and Fremont will drop down to 5A, while eight other schools who will move into the classification from 5A for a total of 24 schools in all sports, with an average student population of approximately 1,547 and a ratio of 1.54.

Those proposed to move up to 6A include Cedar Valley, Clearfield, Cyprus, Granger, Maple Mountain, Northridge, Taylorsville and Wasatch.

Three teams currently competing in 5A in all sports will drop down to 4A, including Bonneville, East and Orem. A total of eight teams currently competing in 4A will jump up to 5A, such as Hillcrest, Mountain View, Payson, Provo, Salem Hills, Spanish Fork, Stansbury and Timpanogos.

Cedar City will drop to 3A in football but will continue to compete in 4A in all other sports, while Logan will drop down to 3A in all sports. And Ben Lomond and Ogden will move up to 4A.

Judge Memorial would move up from 2A to compete in 3A in all sports.

The proposed changes will not going into effect until a final board meeting on Dec. 19, according to the UHSAA, which will allow "time for schools and regions to organize and schedule for the two-year alignment period."

Ahead of the final vote will be a board of trustees meeting on Dec. 4 at 9 a.m. MST, where "final consideration of classification" will be made to place first consideration for regions. A public hearing will be held virtually on Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. MST.

Schools can appeal — one way or the another — to be moved into a different classification. Corner Canyon, for example, is expected to appeal to compete in all sports in the 6A classification.
