PAYSON — A student was arrested Monday after allegedly bringing a gun to Payson Junior High School, according to Principal Kevin Mecham, who said no further threat is posed to the school, students or faculty.
Staff received a report of a student with a firearm in the building, Mecham said in a post on the school's Facebook account. Seth Sorenson, a spokesman for the school district, said other students reported the student who was in possession of a gun.
"The school resource officer and administration responded immediately, locating the student and securing the firearm. The student was taken into custody," Sorenson said. "We want to assure our school community that there is no ongoing threat to student or staff safety. This incident was not related to any threat made against the school. Local law enforcement is continuing their investigation into this matter.
"Unfortunately, we cannot release details of an ongoing police investigation, but we have tried to give as much information as we can," Sorenson said.
Sorenson added that the district cannot release other information about the student, citing privacy laws protecting minors. He did not say how the student obtained the firearm.
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority," Mecham said. "We are working closely with local law enforcement to ensure the continued safety of our school community. ... We appreciate the patience and understanding of our school community. A big thank you to our students for 'seeing something and saying something.'"
