RIVERTON — Three firefighters were injured while fighting a car fire in a Riverton garage on Saturday afternoon.
Just before 1 p.m., firefighters received a call reporting a car caught fire when someone tried to start the vehicle in a garage at 1230 W. 13200 South, according to Unified Fire Authority public information officer Benjamin Porter.
Firefighters responded, quickly getting control of the blaze and putting it out. However, Porter said flammable liquids reignited while firefighters were still inside the garage.
Witness video shows at least one firefighter's clothing caught fire, prompting his fellow firefighters to run to his aid to extinguish the flames.
"We've all been trained since elementary school to stop, drop and roll to try and smother that fire out," Porter said. "I think that the members (firefighters) that swiftly acted and jumped on that firefighter to help extinguish that, I think that that is a notable act. I think that's something that we should ... recognize them for."
Three firefighters sustained injuries, Porter said. Two of them were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, and the third was treated on scene.
The fire was fully extinguished as of 2 p.m. Investigators say it does not appear to be suspicious.
No information was released on the estimated damages sustained.
