WEST VALLEY CITY — A man wanted for allegedly shooting another man in the leg was arrested Thursday when he showed up in court for a separate case.
Aukusitino Heinakau Mafi, 36, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and illegal discharge of a firearm.
On Dec. 23, West Valley police were called to an apartment near 3600 South and 4200 West where a man had been shot in his right leg.
"A female on scene told West Valley officers she was in the bathroom when she observed (the victim) and Aukusitino yelling at each other. After the shots rang out, the female party exited the bathroom where (the victim) was observed in the corner of the kitchen with a gunshot wound to his leg," according to a police booking affidavit.
Police found two shell casings at the scene. At the hospital, it was determined the man suffered a fractured femur. He said Mafi shot him "but did not provide a reason as to why he was shot," the affidavit states.
On Thursday, Mafi was scheduled to appear in West Jordan's 3rd District Court on prior charges of being a restricted person in possession of a gun, driving on a suspended license and speeding. Mafi had been pulled over in October 2023 for speeding and police found drugs and a gun in his vehicle, according to charging documents. He also was accused of driving with a suspended license.
When Mafi showed up for court on Thursday, he was taken into custody for the Dec. 23 shooting.
