WEST VALLEY CITY — Fire crews were able to get a house fire in West Valley City under control Tuesday, but not before the fire caused damages estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The report of a house fire at 3566 W. Christy Ave came in about 10:30 a.m. When emergency crews arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke on the rear exterior and roof of the building and inside, said West Valley Fire Battalion Chief Scott Hall.
Only one resident was at home at the time of the fire, according to Hall, and he was able to make it out safely. Firefighters got the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, despite the compounding effects of wind. A dog inside the home died as a result of the fire.
Hall said the house is not habitable, with damages estimated at $350,000. He believes the fire started outside and came in through an open door.
