HERRIMAN — Only four weeks ago, quarterback Helaman Casuga and receiver Jerome Myles led Corner Canyon to a thrilling upset win over a national powerhouse program.

On Friday, though, both of those prep stars could only watch from the sidelines.

Corner Canyon's injury-riddled season continued Friday in a 21-14 win over Mountain Ridge.

Early in the first quarter, Casuga went down awkwardly when he tried to slide. He limped off the field and didn't return for the rest of the night.

Casuga spent most of the game sitting on a cooler on the sideline with Myles, who suffered a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago. The two are part of a wider injury wave that has hit the Chargers' offense this season.

"It's been a mess," head coach Eric Kjar said of the injuries, adding that he didn't have an update on his star quarterback.

Corner Canyon was still able to gut out a win, thanks to two second quarter touchdown passes by backup quarterback Bronson Evans.

Evans first found Preston Whatcott on a post route for a 45-yard touchdown. Later in the quarter, he hit Diesel Dart over the middle for a 57-yard score.

"I thought he played well," Kjar said of the junior backup QB. "I think there are some things we could have done better overall as a team. There's gonna be things that he's going to wish he could have done better, too, but he'll get there."

As for the team as a whole, Kjar said he thinks his players are responding well to getting put into new situations due to injuries, but some things need to be cleaned up.

"We have to be better beyond the injury stuff," he said, "where that next guy has to probably be a little bit more ready, and we have to play a little bit better, assignment-wise, as a team."

That was seen in the second half where Corner Canyon struggled to put the game away.

Evans was intercepted in the end zone — part of a red zone series that Kjar said was overall "a mess" — and the Chargers mostly relied on a ground attack to nurse the clock away.

Still, Mountain Ridge was able to mount a late rally to try and steal the game. Sentinel quarterback Wyatt Bingham connected with Tytan DeJong on a 4-yard touchdown pass to pull the game within one score with 3:27 left.

Mountain Ridge did get the ball back, but only for an untimed down far away from the end zone. Its Hail Mary attempt was unsuccessful.

Corner Canyon left Herriman with the win but with plenty of questions — most of which center around a growing injury report.
