LAYTON — Criminal charges tied to a brutal attack were filed Monday against a Florida man who police say tried "to rip his mother's eyes out," rendering her nearly blind. She and another elderly woman who tried to intervene were hospitalized.

Dean Garcia, 32, of Vero Beach, is charged in 2nd District Court with mayhem, a second-degree felony, and aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, after police say he attacked his mother and her friend in Layton on Sept. 11.

Neighbors called the police, who responded to find Garcia "with blood spattered across his clothing," and two seriously injured women, according to a police booking affidavit.

Garcia's mother was "rendered nearly blind," according to doctors, after she was taken to a hospital "bleeding from both eyes and had multiple lacerations to her face, and was missing chunks of hair," court documents say.

She told police her son "told her he was going to take out her eyes and then dug his fingers into both of her eyes," the charges allege. The second woman told police Garcia "kicked her in the pelvis multiple times, punched her in the face and hit her with a chair."

He grabbed that second woman while holding a knife and ripped out her hair," the charges say. "She said she believes if she did not intervene, (Garcia) would have killed his mother."

Garcia admitted to police that he had tried to blind his mother and admitted also attacking his mother's friend, according to the affidavit.

No information has been released about the motive of the attack. Prosecutors have asked that Garcia remain in the Davis County Jail without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
