When I was a kid, there were a lot of jobs I planned on having. These jobs included, but were not limited to race car driver, baseball player, famous actor, screenwriter, surgeon, pilot and stuntman.

Yeah, I desperately wanted to be a stuntman.

My brother and I used to set up the trampoline under the playhouse, and one of us would act out big stunts from different movies, and the other would have to guess what movie it was from. Hans Gruber falling from Nakatomi Plaza was a favorite.

I grew up, and I did not become anything on the list — I'm likely furthest away from stuntman. I mean, I literally sustained a massive calf-tear playing pickleball while walking off the court. My body was not cut out to be a stuntman. Still, I never stopped loving great action sequences, and talented stunt teams entertain me to no end in countless movies.

This backstory is one of the reasons why I like "The Fall Guy" so much. Based on the popular 1980s TV show of the same name, the movie stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in an action/comedy/romance. While it's far from a perfect film, it is an absolute blast.

Here are some reasons "The Fall Guy" fell with style and made for a wildly entertaining and fun movie.

Ryan Gosling slays

In "The Fall Guy," Ryan Gosling again proves why he's one of Hollywood's most versatile actors. His portrayal of the lovable yet hapless protagonist is a masterclass in comedic timing and charm. Gosling effortlessly balances deadpan humor with genuine warmth, bringing a sense of authenticity to his character that is both endearing and relatable.

While Gosling is no stranger to dramatic roles, his comedic chops truly shine in this film. From his hilarious interactions with co-stars to his impeccable delivery of one-liners, Gosling steals the show in every one of his scenes.

The man has a palpable charm, precisely what Colt Seavers from "The Fall Guy" needed.

I actually cared about the story

"The Fall Guy" may not break new ground in terms of plot, but it excels at crafting an engaging and entertaining story. The script isn't destined for any Academy Awards but doesn't need to be. What sets this film apart is its ability to balance humor, action and spectacle with a compelling narrative that keeps viewers invested from start to finish.

The movie moves fast and the action and humor are at the forefront. Still, the filmmakers remembered to weave a story that intrigued me, including characters and relationships I cared about and a mystery that ignited my inner detective trying to stay a step ahead.

I also loved how they portray the relationship between Gosling's Seavers and Emily Blunt's Jody Moreno without giving away too much. I could have created a whole section about their chemistry, but I'll leave that for you to experience yourself.

The stunts!

As a film centered around Hollywood stuntmen and stuntwomen, it's no surprise "The Fall Guy" delivers on the action front. The stunt team pulls off some awe-inspiring feats, showcasing the adrenaline-fueled world of daredevilry with jaw-dropping precision. Director David Leitch, a former stuntman, brings his expertise to the table, crafting exhilarating set pieces you'll struggle to believe aren't CGI.

From high-speed car chases to gravity-defying leaps, "The Fall Guy" pays homage to the unsung heroes of the film industry — the stunt performers who risk life and limb to bring movie magic to life. It's a thrilling spectacle that serves as a love letter to the artistry and dedication of stunt teams everywhere, and it's impossible not to be swept up in the excitement.

What parents should know

For parents considering whether "The Fall Guy" is suitable for children, it's worth noting the film is rated PG-13 for good reason. While the language is relatively tame — with only one instance of the F-word, the film does contain some flirtatious banter, kissing and shirtless men. However, the film earns its rating in its action sequences, which feature plenty of fighting and on-screen deaths. While not overly graphic, the violence may be intense for younger viewers.

Conclusion

"The Fall Guy" is ridiculous and silly, and that's exactly what I was hoping for. The movie made me laugh, got my heart pounding, and kept me engaged from start to finish. It's not a perfect movie and, at times, it feels routine, but none of that matters thanks to over-the-top stunts, great one-liners, and palpable chemistry.

It's a fun movie that makes for a great trip to the theater.

"The Fall Guy" is officially rated PG-13 for action and violence, drug content and some language.
