MILLVILLE, Cache County — With a plastic cup strapped to his head and about 50 backflips deep into his attempts, 15-year-old Zack Whitesides hit the bull's-eye on his dartboard and won $10,000 from trick-shot masters Dude Perfect.
The platform is popular for stunts of seemingly simple but actually extremely complicated trick shots, from getting a roll of paper towels onto a holder from across the room to flipping water bottles on top of each other.
A friend of Zack saw Dude Perfect's new "Trick Shot of the Month" contest announcement and knew it would be perfect for him to enter, leading to the submission Zack calls the "brain blowing bangin' backflip bull's-eye" — a shot where he wears a cup strapped to his head that has a dart in it, and when he does a backflip, shoots a dart out of the cup that lands right in the center of the dartboard.
The submission was one among thousands and selected as the winner. "Anywhere on the dartboard would have been special. (But) a bull's-eye?" one of the Dude Perfect members marveled.
Zack has been doing trick shots with his brother in their Millville home in Cache County since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.
The brothers have used ping pong balls, cups, dartboards, staircases, lots of tape and countless redos to accomplish their trick shots.
For the backflip bull's-eye, Zack said, "I mean, a lot of my other trick shots took really long, but instead I got pretty lucky and got it in like 50 tries." Only 50 backflips? He makes it sound like a piece of cake.
He plans to save most of the $10,000 prize after buying himself a new pair of skis.
