SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers traveling through Parleys Canyon should prepare for overnight delays starting Monday as the Utah Department of Transportation begins a major construction project along I-80.
Lane closures will take place nightly between 2300 East and Exit 130 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will keep one lane open in each direction while work is underway.
UDOT expects overnight and weekend delays as construction continues through the summer. Drivers are encouraged to leave early and plan ahead before heading through the canyon.
"Maybe you want to consider an alternative route like Provo Canyon if you're up there at a late-night concert series or a soccer match, any of the activities that are happening, instead of hitting that construction overnight," said UDOT spokesman John Gleason.
The construction is part of a larger multiyear effort to improve I-80 through Parleys Canyon. UDOT plans to repave 22 miles of roadway, improve eight bridges, install 11 miles of fiber optic cable and upgrade nearly 50 miles of culverts.
"It's vital to our economy. We want to make sure that it's in great shape for years to come and that people can get to where they're going with ease and convenience, and above all, safety," Gleason said.
The next phase of the project is expected to begin later this summer and will include paving between Mountain Dell Reservoir and Lambs Canyon.
