SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. Blake Moore declared a win in his election race Tuesday night to win a fourth term in Congress.
Moore, R-Utah, fought off a challenge from Democrat Peter Crosby, earning at least 49.5% of the vote in early totals.
Crosby had 43.6% of the vote in early totals.
Moore currently represents Utah's 1st Congressional District, but will return to Washington in January as the representative for the 2nd District thanks to a newly redrawn map adopted by the courts last year. The district still covers much of Moore's current territory in northern Utah.
Moore serves as the vice chairman of the Republican Conference in the U.S. House of Representatives, making him the top-ranking member of Utah's congressional delegation. He has pitched himself as a pragmatic lawmaker who can get things done in Washington.
The 2nd District seat was widely expected to fall in the Republican column, but Democrats got a surge of hope thanks to a poll conducted for the Utah Debate Commission that found Crosby trailing by just 5 points, 39-34%.
Moore's campaign said internal polling showed the Republican with better odds, while Crosby's camp hoped a potential blue wave across the country could help push him across the finish line.
