Locals in the NFL: Tyler Allgeier delivers one of best all-around performance of career

SALT LAKE CITY — Tyler Allgeier delivered the best all-around performance of his career when the Arizona Cardinals needed it most.

With fellow running backs Jeremiyah Love and Bam Knight sidelined by injuries, Allgeier rushed for a career-high 147 yards and added 44 receiving yards in Arizona's 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys.

The former BYU running back finished with a career-high 191 yards from scrimmage, helping the Cardinals erase a double-digit deficit and earn their third win of the season.

The performance gave Arizona more than a replacement option in a depleted backfield. Allgeier became the engine of the Cardinals' comeback, using a mix of power, patience and breakaway speed to carry the offense through the second half and into overtime.

Allgeier crossed the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time this season and did most of his damage after halftime.

His breakout moment came when he took a handoff, slipped through traffic near the line of scrimmage and followed a downfield block from former Brighton High standout Simi Fehoko for a career-long 63-yard touchdown run. The run alone surpassed Allgeier's previous single-game season high of 61 yards from scrimmage.

After Dallas pushed its lead to 24-10, Allgeier helped answer on Arizona's next possession. He opened the drive with a 52-yard run, then caught a 17-yard pass to set up first-and-goal from the 3-yard line.

On third-and-goal, Gardner Minshew II found Allgeier out of the backfield. Allgeier fought through two Dallas defenders and stretched the ball across the goal line before hitting the turf, pulling Arizona back into the game.

The Cardinals' comeback came down to their final drive of regulation.

Allgeier helped get it started with a 14-yard reception on the first play of the possession and added another catch as Arizona moved into position to tie the game at 30 and force overtime.

He remained central to the offense in the extra period, carrying five times for 19 yards to help set up the game-winning field goal.

By the end of the afternoon, Allgeier had turned an injury-driven opportunity into the most productive game of his career. For a Cardinals team searching for answers, his 191-yard performance helped change the game — and may have changed the shape of Arizona's backfield moving forward.
