SOUTH SALT LAKE — A teenage boy is in the hospital with a critical injury after suffering a gunshot wound in South Salt Lake, police said.

Officers responded to the area of Vidas Avenue about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday on reports of a shooting, South Salt Lake police spokesperson Shaun Ward said.

Police initially said a teenage girl was located with a gunshot wound and transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries that did not appear life-threatening, but in an update they later stated that it was a boy.

Police said a female teenage suspect was taken into custody.

Ward said detectives are looking into what led up to the shooting, but they believe it was an isolated incident.

Police are asking for any witnesses to call the nonemergency dispatch line at 801-840-4000.
