SALT LAKE CITY — One person is dead and another was injured after a crash between a semitruck and a minivan in the area of 5600 W. 300 South, Salt Lake City police said Wednesday afternoon.

A semi was waiting to turn left at the intersection when the minivan attempted to go around the truck and turned into a lane of travel intended to go straight, police said.

The minivan was then struck by another semitruck going north on 5600 West.

The semi came to a stop in a ditch, and the minivan was pushed back behind another vehicle, according to police.

The driver of the minivan died at the scene, and a passenger was hospitalized with critical injuries, police said.

Police did not identify the driver who died.

As of 7 p.m., 5600 West was still blocked in the area as crews remained on scene. Police advise drivers to seek an alternate route for the next several hours.
