HURRICANE, Washington County — Police have identified a man killed in a crash involving a total of five vehicles on Friday on state Route 59 southeast of Hurricane.
Dallin Mangelson, 24, was killed when the driver's side of his Chevy Malibu was struck while he was trying to avoid being hit by a vehicle. The vehicle that hit Mangelson slid across a highway after its driver was trying to get out of another car's way that was going too fast, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden.
The Utah Department of Public Safety said in a press release that a black car was traveling east while passing traffic in oncoming lanes at a high rate of speed.
A gold Chevy Avalanche heading west swerved onto the right shoulder to avoid the black car, overcorrected and slid across the highway into oncoming traffic.
Mangelson, who was in a third vehicle, swerved to the right to miss the Chevy Avalanche but was struck on the driver's side and then rolled down an embankment. He was flown to a hospital, where he died.
A motorcyclist traveling east swerved to avoid the collision but brushed a Jeep Wrangler, before it, too, rolled. The motorcyclist also sustained critical injuries from the crash, according to Roden.
No update was provided on the motorcyclist's condition as of Monday.
In total, four people were transported from the scene, two of whom had injuries that did not appear life-threatening.
