SANDY — Across the United States, from state to state and city to city, communities are endeavoring to find unique ways to celebrate America's 250th anniversary this year.
This includes the Beehive State
As part of Utah's America 250 celebration, leaders in Sandy are inviting residents to participate in a bevy of events ranging from large citywide gatherings to opportunities for people to foster a deeper connection with the city.
Last Thursday, Sandy announced an initiative that encourages community members to engage in activities that range from exploring the outdoors to engaging with local elected officials.
The Sandy 250 challenge aims to activate citizens to try 250 activities over a 25-week period. The campaign, according to city officials, is intended to inspire connection, discovery and community pride.
"Let's look at America 250 — what makes America great? It's our people; it's our communities that come together in unity and work for a common goal," said Susan Wood, public information officer for Sandy.
A different theme will be posted each week via the city's social media platforms where participants can choose from an extensive list of activities or projects to take on. Ideas listed a dedicated page to the challenge on the city's website include options like visiting a city park in Sandy, going for a horseback ride, attending a City Council meeting, volunteering at the senior center or animal shelter, creating an emergency preparedness plan for your home or taking time to read a book.
"This is not a short list," Wood said. "There are a lot of ideas for individuals, friends, families, larger groups, to get out and enjoy the community that we've got right here in Sandy. It's part of a nationwide effort to just explore what America offers — and in Sandy city, we are rich with offerings."
Those who are ambitious enough are challenged to participate in 10 activities a week, then share what they've completed on one of the city's social media platforms.
While participants may be able to earn weekly prizes for their efforts, including a virtual parks medal, city officials said the ultimate goal of the Sandy 250 challenge is fostering community spirit and working together as one to honor America's semiquincentennial year.
Wood said she not only hopes Sandy residents engage in its city's America 250 initiative and events but that people in other cities across the state also take advantage of offerings in their respective communities.
"So many Utah communities are rich with opportunity — that's one of the wonderful things we love about living here in our Utah communities, is just all that they have to offer," she said. "And when we look at this list, honestly, we're talking about just cultural exchanges, pets, animals, home improvement. These are things that we do every day, and it's all something that we value."
Throughout the year, Sandy is hosting other contests like a community art contest and various events that highlight the nation's history, while bringing people together.
