SALT LAKE CITY — Last week's big snowstorm gave everyone a reminder of what winter in Utah is supposed to be like and what that can mean on the roads.
During the recent storm, several cars crashed, slid off the road or got stuck in the snow. Next time, if that happens to you, there are some smart things Utah's emergency management leaders suggest you should keep in your car, just in case.
In the next storm, possible slick roads could lead to crashes and leave cars stranded in the cold. Being unprepared for that could be an even bigger headache. So, to get ahead of it, Utah's Division of Emergency Management told KSL pop open your trunk and take a look around and see what you got.
You want to have a few winter driving essentials – food and water are standard, so is a set of jumper cables and ice scraper, clothing to keep you warm, and shoes or boots ready to trudge around in the snow, in case you have to push your car out, or change a tire.
"It's important to always be prepared for any emergency, so make sure that you start building your car kit now," said Genevieve Keys, public information officer for the Utah Division of Emergency Management.
Keys said another smart idea is to drive with at least half a tank of gas in your car. You don't want to get stranded and run out of gas, too.
