SOUTH SALT LAKE — A Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy has been charged with billing the department for nearly $75,000 of time he didn't actually work.

John Leakona Green, 39, of Herriman, was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with theft by deception, a second-degree felony.

From Nov. 24, 2024, through Oct. 25, 2025, Green "submitted 1,350.25 hours of unverified work time, resulting in a financial loss to the sheriff's office of approximately $74,290," according to charging documents.

Green was questioned in November and "admitted the investigative report was accurate. Green admitted he knowingly submitted timecards for hours he was not physically present for and had not worked, stating he had done so repeatedly since October 2024 to pay for living expenses," the charges state.

Green worked at the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office from 2014 to December 2025, and "is no longer an employee at the sheriff's office," a spokesman said.
