SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah Department of Corrections sergeant died early Sunday in a rollover crash near the Utah State Correctional Facility.
Police received a call at 7:25 a.m. about the accident. The vehicle had left the roadway near 700 North and 8000 West and rolled multiple times about 300 yards south of the intersection, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Kevin Blue.
Sgt. Robert "Jay" Hill, 62, who was the only occupant, was ejected from the vehicle. He died before first responders arrived, Salt Lake police said.
"Preliminary information indicates the driver was heading south on 8000 West when (he) lost control and rolled into the field. No other vehicles were involved," police said in a statement.
Detectives were investigating the circumstances and cause of the crash.

Hill worked with the Utah Department of Corrections since 1996, serving in various roles, including the maximum security unit when the prison was in Draper. He most recently worked in enforcement at the state prison.
"The passing of Sgt. Hill is a profound loss for our department and for our entire law enforcement community," Jared Garcia, executive director of the Utah Department of Corrections, said in a statement. "We extend our deepest sympathies to Robert's loved ones and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time."
The department said it was offering assistance to staff at the facilities as they cope with the loss.
