4A girls wrestling: Depth carries Mountain Crest to 5th title in 6 years

OREM — Mountain Crest's victory lap around the 4A girls wrestling state tournament was more like a casual stroll, with four runners up among four finalists.

The Mustangs' depth carried them back to the top of the mountain Saturday night.

Mountain Crest had four second-place finishers, one in third, four in fifth and placed two more on the podium in sixth place to hold off Cache Valley rival Ridgeline at the UCCU Center in Orem.

"That's always been our strength. We've never had superstars, but we have depth," Mountain Crest coach Susan Dart said. "We spend as much time with our third and fourth string as we do with our No. 1s — and it pays off at the state tournament."

It's the fifth championship in since the Utah High School Activities Association sanctioned girls wrestling six years ago. Only Bear River — last year's champs — have another in six seasons of 4A competition.

The Riverhawks made them work for it, though.

After falling behind by 11 points after Friday's first day of competition, Ridgeline made up plenty of ground. The Riverhawks won all four of their championship bouts to add to a one finisher in third, fourth, fifth and sixth place.

That includes Kemrie Grange, who won her second individual title to improve to 45-7 on the year at 120 pounds.

"This is insane, because I didn't think I could do this once, let alone a second time," Grange said. "it feels so good to know that I didn't just do it once, but I could do it again."

But moments after the sophomore won by pin in just over four minutes, she didn't leave the side of the mat. Instead, Grange watched intently as her older sister Keagan added to the family's haul with her first championship at 125.

"Last year was heartbreaking," the younger Granger added. "To see her win this year, knowing how much work she put in is amazing. She's put in so much work, and she deserves it more than anyone."
