MILAN, Italy — The second day of competition featured several shutouts and some games that got out of hand quickly.
Switzerland dominated France 4-0 to open the second day of preliminary games. The Swiss scored two opening period goals before the New Jersey Devils' Timo Meier netted a pair of goals in the final period.
The second game of the day wasn't much different, though the rosters for Canada and Czechia are littered with more well known players that the casual hockey fan would recognize.
Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka is one of three goalies on Czechia's roster for the Olympics but he ultimately was scratched in favor of Lukas Dostal and Dan Vladar. Dostal, the Ducks' starting netminder, drew the start for Czechia.
Both countries were deadlocked in the first period but Canadian youngster Macklin Celebrini scored the games' first goal as the period came to a close. The 19-year-old Celebrini was the No. 1 pick for the San Jose Sharks two years ago and he scored the opening goal for Canada at the Olympics.

Canada found their groove from that point on, adding three more goals from multiple NHL stars to give them the 5-0 shutout. Goaltender Jordan Binnington continues to shine in big moments as he was a perfect 26/26 on saves.
Canada's captain Sidney Crosby recorded two points on two assists while Connor McDavid picked up three assists of his own in the win.
The third and fourth games took place simultaneously.
The United States jumped out to a quick lead thanks to Brady Tkachuk. The US had their second goal of the first period overturned after a coaches challenge by Latvia and the play was ruled offside.
Latvia then tied things up after it nearly looked like the US would go up 2-0.
Brock Nelson helped the US go up three goals in the second period after he netted a pair of goals and Buffalo's Tage Thompson scored on a power play.

With a power play goal of his own, Auston Matthews capped off a strong performance for the US in the third period to secure the 5-1 win.
Mammoth captain Clayton Keller was a scratch for the US in their opening game.
Germany faced off against Denmark and Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl scored his first goal of the 2026 Winter Olympics just 23 seconds into the match.
Denmark tied things up on a goal from Oscar Fisker Molgaard but two goals from Tim Stutzle in the second period were the difference in the game for Germany as they picked up the 3-1 victory.
Utah's J.J. Peterka picked up an assist and recorded three shots on goal in the win for Germany.
