GRAND BLANC, Mich. — On Sept. 28, 2025, officers with the Grand Blanc Police Department and the Genesee County Sheriff's Office responded to an active shooter at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building.

When they arrived, they found that 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford had crashed his truck into the building and had set the building on fire. Sanford was also armed with a gun and shot at several church members, killing four.

Officers found Sanford and gave commands to him to stand down, but he refused, prompting police to fatally shoot him.

The Michigan officers rushed into the building to rescue those trapped inside and provide first aid to those in need.

According to authorities, Sanford's attack was targeted against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as he held a hatred against the religion and its members.
