SALT LAKE CITY — Launched in 2013, World Ski Awards aims to recognize the best in ski tourism around the globe.
Votes are cast online by ski industry professionals such as senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators and media and the public in a range of categories, including best resorts, hotels, chalets and tour operators.
Stein Eriksen Lodge came away as "World's Best Ski Hotel," beating out hotels from 23 different countries. Located mid-mountain at Deer Valley Resort, this is the second year in a row the high-end hotel has won the award.
"We are so proud to have earned the distinguished title of World's Best Ski Hotel from our guests and industry peers who voted in this year's World Ski Awards," Russ Olsen, president and CEO of Stein Collection, said in a press release. "Stein Eriksen Lodge continues to raise the industry standard for luxury ski destinations across the globe, and it is all thanks to our exceptional staff who are dedicated to providing the legendary guest service for which we are acclaimed."
Stein Eriksen Lodge opened in December 1982 and has undergone several expansions over the years. Room rates on its website for a weekend in December ranged from $460 a night for a deluxe king room with a fireplace to $3,489 a night for a three-bedroom suite, both before taxes and fees.
Condé Nast Traveler described the hotel this way:
"This mid-mountain Norwegian-style lodge is the 'ultimate ski hotel with old-world charm,' thanks to custom millwork, flower paintings from the lowland areas of eastern Norway, and leather, copper and stone elements. Each room in the lodge is uniquely styled, but all have dark-wood furnishings, a Nordic color scheme, and bathrooms with Molton Brown toiletries. Suites come with large stone fireplaces. Glitretind serves up regional American cuisine and unique specialties — try the Norwegian potato pancakes — with views of the Wasatch Mountains. The 23,000-square-foot spa has 16 treatment rooms."
Few U.S. ski areas took top honors in World Ski Awards but some were among the finalists.
Hotel Terra in Jackson Hole was among the top three contenders for Best Green Ski Hotel, and Goldener Hirsch in Park City made it into the top three for Best Boutique Ski Hotel, per Powder magazine. Alterra Mountain Company and Vail Resorts were both in the top three for Best Ski Resort Group.
