KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Jane Hedengren, a BYU signee, won Gatorade's national female player of the year.
  • She set national records in mile, two-mile, 5,000 meters, and 3,000 meters.
  • Cameron Boozer, another ESPY winner, is a top basketball recruit from Salt Lake City.

PROVO — BYU signee Jane Hedengren isn't slowing down after her record-setting senior season.

The former Timpview High distance star was named national female player of the year by Gatorade, receiving the award at Wednesday night's ESPYS alongside Salt Lake City native Cameron Boozer.

The duo were presented top prep honors on the ESPN broadcast by former Gatorade national girls track and field athlete of the year Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The other finalists for Gatorade's female Best Player included:

  • Campbell Flynn, Nebraska women's volleyball commit (Farmington, Michigan)
  • Hannah Wells, Texas softball commit (Coahama, Texas)
  • Addison Halpern, Virginia women's soccer commit (Somerset, New Jersey)
  • Aaliyah Chavez, Oklahoma women's basketball commit (Lubbock, Texas)

After winning the 5A state cross country title in the fall, Hedengren went on to crush the Nike Cross Nationals course record in 16 minutes, 32.7 seconds, beating the field by more than 40 seconds and improving on the previous course record mark of 16:37.8 held by former four-time NCAA champion and Adidas pro Katelyn Tuohy since 2018.

She wasn't done, though.

After rewriting the Utah High School Activities Association record book in track and field and winning titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, Hedengren set national records in the mile, two mile and 5,000 meters, then crushed the national record in the 3,000 meters at Nike Outdoor Nationals in 8:40.03.

That time was just 12 seconds off the world record set by Great Britain's Zola Budd in 1985 en route to Gatorade national female track and field athlete of the year.

Hedengren, who maintained a 3.79 weighted GPA and volunteers locally with Road Runner Junior Club in Provo as a coach and race-day official, joined Boozer in accepting top honors.

The 6-foot-9 Duke signee was a consensus top-five boys' basketball recruit nationally, including No. 2 by USA Today after a standout senior campaign at Miami's Columbus High.

The son of two-time NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer who was born in Salt Lake City during his father's Utah Jazz career, is a two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year recipient and two-time Mr. Basketball USA by ESPN.

Boozer and his twin brother, Cayden, a five-star point guard who has also signed with Duke, helped lead the United States' U17 national team to a gold medal in the FIBA U17 World Cup in Turkey one year ago.

Other ESPY award winners Wednesday night included Simone Biles for Best Championship Performance in the Olympic gymnastics all-around, U.S. gymnast Suni Lee for Best Comeback Athlete, USA women's rugby star Ilona Maher for Best Breakthrough Athlete, Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Best Athlete in a Men's Sport.
