WEST VALLEY CITY — A man was arrested over the weekend after police say he was involved in a fatal crash and then tried to walk away.

Osvaldo Chavez Segovia, 20, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, obstruction of justice, giving false information about an accident, not having a driver's license and being a minor who consumed alcohol.

Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a crash on state Route 111 near 5250 South.

"A total of three vehicles were involved, and several occupants fled the scene," according to a police booking affidavit.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene and three others were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Chavez was found by officers at the scene, but claimed he was walking in the area when he saw the crash, the affidavit states. He then filled out a witness statement for police, allegedly using a false name.

"The false written statement has the arrested party's phone number and his date of birth. The statement reads as if Chavez Segovia was outside the vehicle as a witness, not the driver. Due to Mr. Chavez Segovia providing false information on scene, the truck was ruled a hit-and-run vehicle," according to the affidavit.

Chavez was arrested several hours later at a residence and officers determined he had consumed alcohol.

"Mr. Chavez Segovia has never been issued a driver's license," police wrote in the affidavit. "His false information provided on scene resulted in misleading law enforcement efforts while investigating a felony offense."

Information about the person killed in the accident has not been released.
