LEHI — An Alabama man who allegedly got angry at his adult stepdaughter for harming herself while visiting her in Utah County is accused of trying to kill her.

Donn Edward Phillips, 75, of Childersburg, Alabama, was charged last week in 4th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony.

Phillips had been staying with his stepdaughter in Lehi for a few weeks when, on June 21, he got angry and accused her of harming herself, according to charging documents.

Phillips approached his stepdaughter from behind and "wrapped his arm tightly around (her) neck" while saying, "I'm gonna kill you," the charges state.

"As (he) held (the woman) in the chokehold, he was also hitting her in the side," according to the charges. "(The woman's) mother told police that she'd never seen (Phillips) act like that, but she was certain that had she not intervened, (he) would have killed (her)."
