PROVO — Nothing is ever done until you get it in writing, and BYU men's basketball did just that with a highly regarded transfer Monday morning.
The Cougars formalized the pledge of Baylor transfer Robert Wright III after a busy weekend, adding the five-star point guard to a group of newcomers that includes five-star jumbo wing AJ Dybantsa and four-star rim runner Xavion Staton from Utah Prep.
The 6-foot-1 floor general who earned all-freshman and All-Big 12 honorable mention honors with the Bears averaged 11.5 points, 4.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 41.4% from the field and 34.2% from beyond the arc in 35 games last year.
Considered one of the top point guards in the portal, Wright dished out 148 assists in his freshman campaign, the fifth-most by any freshmen in NCAA Division I men's basketball last season that included five or more assists 10 times and a career-high 13 dimes in a 94-49 win over Norfolk State.
"We are excited to welcome Rob and his entire family to BYU," head coach Kevin Young said of Wright, who was rated the No. 24 recruit in the ESPN 100 for the Class of 2024. "He comes from a great family, and we are thrilled to have them all join Cougar Nation.
"Rob is one of the most dynamic guards in the country with his combination of speed and quickness. He is the ultimate floor general and makes everyone around him better. We look forward to getting Rob on campus and getting to work."
Wright's commitment, even before it was finalized, has vaulted the Cougars up way-too-early ratings, with CBS Sports surging the Cougars up 13 spots to No. 5 in the college basketball reporter Gary Parrish's rankings.
That's also with the assumption that Richie Saunders, BYU's leading scorer who has not made known his intentions related to the NBA draft, returns to college basketball for his final season of eligibility.
He wasn't the only one on campus over the weekend, though.

Utah Valley guard Tanner Toolson also visited campus starting Friday. The 6-foot-5 transfer guard from Vancouver, Washington, averaged 13.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last year, helping the Wolverines to a 25-9 record, a 15-1 record in Western Athletic Conference play and a WAC regular-season championship to go along with an unblemished 12-0 mark at home in coach Todd Phillips' second season.
Toolson, who played in six games averaging 3.5 points while averaging 44.4% from the field as a freshman at BYU, is one of close to a dozen players from UVU in the transfer portal, according to several reports. He has two years of eligibility after earning a redshirt for that 2022-23 campaign.
The son of former BYU star Andy Toolson and younger brother of Utah Valley star Conner Toolson also visited Iowa on Sunday and plans to visit Utah State this week, with Georgia and Xavier also involved in his recruitment, according to League Ready's Sam Kayser.
BYU ia also set to host a visit from UMass Lowell transfer Martin Somerville beginning Monday, Kayser reported. The 6-foot-3 native of Bowie, Maryland, averaged 13.6 points, 3.7 assists and 2.9 rebounds on 42% shooting as a freshman for the River Hawks, who went 17-15 in Somerville's America East rookie of the year season.
Somerville also has a visit scheduled with Florida State.
