WEST JORDAN — A South Salt Lake man already facing charges for one of two shootings that happened within 24 hours at the same apartment complex has now been charged in connection with the second shooting, too.
Hidir Yousef Doka, 21, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with discharge of a firearm, a second-degree felony.
At about 12:30 a.m. on July 13, West Jordan police were called to the Embarc at West Jordan apartments, 6885 S. Redwood Road, on a report of a shooting. They arrived to find five shell casings and learned that a man had been shot in the leg.
Investigators learned that Doka and a woman had gone to a party at the apartment complex and the victim got into a fight with Doka, whom he did not know. The victim punched Doka and knocked him to the ground and then took his phone and shoes, according to charging documents. He then broke Doka's phone by throwing it on the ground.
Doka left the party, but contacted a friend and returned to the apartment complex and shot the man who assaulted him, the charges allege. He was charged last year for that incident in 3rd District Court with five counts of discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony. At the time, prosecutors noted Doka was "being investigated by the West Jordan Police Department for attempted murder for an incident that occurred within 24 hours of the current case."
"In the second shooting, officers responded to the same location and recovered a total of 53 bullet casings on the ground," according to the charges filed last year. Two people were shot, including a female who was shot in the back of the neck. Officers discovered bullet holes in at least five vehicles and several occupied apartments.
A 16-year-old boy was also shot in the ankle, according to the charges. None of the shooting victims had life-threatening injuries and were treated at a local hospital.
After the first shooting, a friend of the victim messaged Doka and told him to "do better," according to charging documents filed Wednesday. That allegedly prompted Doka to reply that "he was going to go back to the apartments with his friends to 'post up and catch them.'"
Investigators determined the .40-caliber casings from both shootings were fired from the same gun, charging documents state.
Doka was arrested on July 19, 2024. While in jail, detectives obtained recorded phone conversations that confirmed Doka's involvement, the charges say.
"They said they jumped me and then all that happened basically. So he snitched on himself and then snitched on me" and "I knew they told, bro … I was like, 'How … did they come to get me so fast?" Doka said, according to the charges.
The next court hearing concerning the first shooting is scheduled for Friday.
