LAYTON — Fire officials believe cigarette ashes ignited a Layton apartment fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon.
The fire burned a two-story fourplex near 1925 N. Hillfield Road, according to the Layton Fire Department. Fire crews were initially called to a report of a bedroom fire.
Layton firefighters were assisted by the Hill Air Force Base Fire Department.
When arriving at the scene, the battalion chief said the fire was coming out of the south and west lower windows of one of the residences of the fourplex, but didn't appear to have extended to the other units. Crews extinguished the fire within 10 minutes of arrival.
When questioning the occupant of the unit, she reported having "dropped cigarette ashes" in the bedroom, according to a post from Layton fire officials.
Damages to the unit are estimated to be $150,000. No injuries were reported. The cause of blaze remains under investigation.
