WEST JORDAN — Police have arrested a 19-year-old documented gang member in connection with a fatal shooting over the weekend in West Jordan.
Tayden Bentley Huntsman was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail early Thursday for investigation of aggravated murder, witness tampering, obstruction and 11 counts of illegal discharge of a firearm.
The investigation began Sunday when police were called to a disturbance outside a house near 8000 South and 6400 West at about 3:45 a.m. Responding officers arrived to find Hugo Lucero Perez, 19, had been shot. He was taken to a local hospital but died from his injuries.
"Investigators obtained video surveillance from residences in the area and observed one individual fire 11 shots at the victim and other witnesses, standing next to a vehicle. Statements from multiple witnesses and involved parties … identified Tayden Huntsman as the suspect," a police booking affidavit states.
West Jordan police on Thursday said Huntsman was involved in an argument with Perez at a party before the shooting occurred. Three others near Perez were also shot at and a vehicle was struck multiple times, police stated.
One witness told detectives "Tayden admitted to them that he shot Hugo and it was for gang stuff," according to the affidavit. After the shooting, Huntsman allegedly texted others "instructing them and their friends to say he and his friends were not at the party."
"Tayden Huntsman has been linked to gang activity and was documented as a gang member as of Feb. 2," police stated. "We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the community members who came forward with information and support during this investigation. Your cooperation and courage play a vital role in enhancing the safety of our community."
A GoFundMe* campaign was started in memory of Perez and to help cover funeral costs.
"He was a loving and caring person, always with a warm smile and a generous heart. Hugo touched the lives of everyone who knew him, and his absence leaves a great void in our hearts. As we navigate this difficult time, we are asking for your support to help cover the funeral expenses. Your contributions will allow us to give Hugo Lucero Perez the tribute he deserves, honor his memory, and say our goodbyes with peace of mind," the campaign site states.
