MILFORD, Beaver County — Rodney John Rose, 62, and his two dogs were killed in a house fire early Monday, Milford City officials confirmed.

"Rod has been a friend to many people. He would do anything for anyone, including give someone the shirt off his back," Rose's obituary said. He was born in

At 2:45 a.m., the Beaver County Fire District received a report of a structure fire in Milford at 141 N. 100 East.

A neighbor across the street saw the flames and started pounding on the door, trying to get somebody inside to wake up. About three minutes later, the firefighters arrived at the home, which was fully engulfed in flames, Beaver County Fire Chief Les Whitney said.

The fire was "so involved," the chief said, that firefighters had to battle the blaze from outside in a defensive position. Once the firefighters got the flames under control, they started searching the structure because a man who lives at a different location told them his dad was likely inside.

The firefighters located Rose, and two dogs deceased in the home, Whitney said.

Whitney said the cause of the fire was not yet known. Firefighters were still on the scene at 5 p.m., mopping up hop spots.

Because it's a small community, the fire chief said the loss of the man will hit everyone hard. Whitney said he, personally, has known the man who died since he was a child.
