SNOWVILLE, Box Elder County — A man whose car had broken down was walking on I-84 when he was hit by two semitrucks and killed last week, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The impacts happened just south of the Idaho border, around a mile west of Snowville, in Box Elder County.
A trooper was investigating "a jackknifed semi crash in the area" when Matthew R. Kimball, 48, of South Ogden, approached. He asked "for a ride into town because his vehicle had broken down a short distance away. The trooper asked him to wait in his vehicle until he finished the crash," UHP said in a statement. "Instead of returning to his car, the pedestrian walked past his vehicle for a couple miles when he was struck."
The driver of a semitruck saw the man at 7:47 p.m. walking east in the right lane at the last minute. The driver "swerved left to avoid contact," but Kimball "was struck by the side view mirror and knocked to the ground," according to UHP.
A second semitruck directly behind the first "was unable to stop or see what happened ahead of him" and hit Kimball, killing him on impact, the statement says.
