SALT LAKE CITY — An 18-year-old man was arrested Friday night following a rollover crash on State Street that Salt Lake City police say was the result of impaired driving.

About 8:48 p.m., a Salt Lake officer "encountered the crash scene moments after it occurred," according to a Saturday news release.

The man was driving north on State Street "at speeds significantly greater than the posted limit," before crashing into a car stopped at the red light at the intersection of 400 South and State Street, the release says.

His car flipped, and two other cars were damaged in "secondary impacts," according to the police. The passenger of the car that rolled over, a 22-year-old woman, went to the hospital with minor injuries, police say.

The 18-year-old driver was arrested and booked for investigation of driving under the influence and negligently operating a vehicle resulting in injury.

"Driving impaired is an inexcusable and reckless decision that puts our entire community in danger," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown in a prepared statement. "The victims of these crashes can be left with life-altering injuries, emotional trauma and, in the worst cases, the loss of life. I urge everyone to make responsible choices by planning ahead, using a designated driver, or calling for a ride. There is just never an excuse for putting lives at risk."
