SALT LAKE CITY — The principal at West High School resigned from his position Tuesday after he was placed on administrative leave last week.
Jared Wright said in a Facebook post Tuesday that he has worked in the Salt Lake City School District for 20 years, had been the high school's principal for over four years, and has decided to step down due to "some pressing family obligations."
On Friday, the school district released a statement that said the decision to place him on leave was "not related" to safety issues, but did not provide further explanation. That same day, students of the school held a walkout, calling for transparency.
Late Tuesday, the Salt Lake City School District issued a statement regarding the next steps for West High School.
The statement from Yándary Z. Chatwin, executive director of Communications and Community Relations for the school district, says in part, "Mr. Wayne Culley will continue to lead West through the end of the school year.
Culley has been an assistant principal at the high school for the past two years, the statement said.
Chatwin added, "West High School is in good hands."
