SALT LAKE CITY — A Provo man has been detained on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault after allegedly holding a woman against her will in her Salt Lake City apartment.

Salt Lake City police arrested Toney Murray, 19, on Friday, according to a probable cause affidavit, and he remained in the Salt Lake County jail as of Monday. Online jail records list Provo as Murray's home.

According to the affidavit, Murray held a woman against her will from the evening of Jan. 15 until last Friday, when she was able to summon help from the landlord of the housing complex where she lives. The man is accused in the affidavit of aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

Murray allegedly threatened the woman with a knife on encountering her on Jan. 15 as she was coming home from work. He also allegedly placed her in a chokehold and threw her on the ground. The suspect "told the victim he would keep her hostage for five days," reads the affidavit from Salt Lake City police.

The woman left the apartment sometime on Friday after telling Murray she needed to speak to her landlord. That's when police were called to the scene. "While speaking to the victim, she showed me her throat, which appeared to have been swollen, bruises on her right elbow from being thrown onto the ground," the affidavit states.

The charging documents don't specify a relationship between Murray and the woman, but the order from 3rd District Court Judge Teresa Welch states Murray will be held without bail and called the matter a "domestic violence offense." The police affidavit says Murray is currently on probation in a separate aggravated assault case.
