GREEN RIVER — Two men were arrested Tuesday after leading troopers on a chase that reached speeds of 130 mph.
The investigation began about 7:45 a.m. when emergency dispatchers received a 911 call. The caller did not speak and hung up a short time later, but dispatchers said they could hear a woman crying and two men yelling, according to a police booking affidavit.
Police determined the call came from a vehicle traveling east on I-70. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted the suspected vehicle stopped in the shoulder of the freeway where the driver and passenger were switching places, the affidavit states.
"As I exited my vehicle, I could see the driver in the (driver's side) mirror look at me, and then the vehicle fled. A pursuit was initiated. Along the pursuit, the female passenger was kicked out of the vehicle," the trooper wrote in the affidavit.
While one trooper stayed with the woman, another continued chasing the fleeing vehicle. The UHP says it was later determined that the woman was initially with the men willingly and was not injured.
"The vehicle was driving at excessive speeds of 130 mph and greater in both a 60-mph zone and 80-mph zone," according to the affidavit.
The vehicle's tires were spiked by an Emery County sheriff's deputy just outside of Green River. The car came to a stop two miles later and two men got out and ran, the affidavit states.
One man was quickly taken into custody. The other hopped over a fence and ran for up to a half-mile before finally surrendering, according to the affidavit. A police K-9 was called to check the vehicle the men were driving and indicated the possible presence of drugs inside, prompting troopers to search the car.
"During the search, one baggie of cocaine was located and one baggie of crack cocaine was located. We also located a laptop, a printer and several false cashier's checks for various amounts of money, along with blank security prescription papers," the affidavit states.
A stolen bank card was also located.
Carson Coleman Burton, 25, and Bobby Antwone Jones, 21, were each arrested for investigation of failing to stop for police, running from police, two counts of drug possession, six counts of possession of a forgery device and unlawful possession of a bank card. Jones was also booked on suspicion of an additional charge of reckless driving.
At the time of Tuesday's incident, Jones had three warrants out for his arrest. In one case, Jones is facing criminal charges for allegedly using a fake driver's license and fake credit card to rent a 2023 Lincoln Navigator. A warrant was issued when he failed to show up for court. In another case, he was accused of trying to purchase a $52,000 truck using fraudulent documents, according the charges. He was convicted a year ago of attempted theft and forgery, but a warrant was issued for his arrest for violating the conditions of his probation, court documents state.
