BEAVER — Utah Highway Patrol and Sevier County police pursued and stopped a semitruck just before it burst into flames late Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the vehicle was driving erratically going west on I-70. A Sevier County deputy signaled for the driver to stop, but the driver failed to yield, according to a statement from Sevier County Sheriff Nathan J. Curtis. The local police worked with the Utah Highway Patrol to attempt to stop the vehicle using spikes, but the driver kept going south onto 1-15 even after the tires had been punctured.

The truck eventually came to a stop about 3 miles north of Beaver, with smoke coming from the vehicle from the friction on the rims, Curtis said. The driver exited the vehicle and was taken into custody, and the semi burst into flames. The Beaver Fire Department and emergency medical services arrived on the scene and put out the flames.

"Charges are pending as we work on the details of the truck ownership and other evidence is processed. We will release more information as it is available," Curtis said.

The fire and cleanup temporarily closed southbound I-15 north of Beaver.
