ST. GEORGE — Dan-O, Iron County's newest K-9 officer, is fresh out of his certification training and is eager to start working, his fellow law enforcement officers said.

During a brief training session at Iron County Sheriff's Office in Cedar City on Wednesday afternoon, Dan-O demonstrated and practiced his indication skills.

Dan-O, a 2½-year-old German Shepherd from Holland, specializes in explosive detection and is certified on 24 different related odors, said his partner and handler, Iron County sheriff's deputy Jared O'Mealy.

"He's also certified in firearms," O'Mealy said. "So, if there's a shooting and they need to find cartridges, he's able to be used for that. He's able to help different agencies find guns that people can stash inside of walls and other places."
