SALT LAKE CITY — One of the top basketball prospects from Utah's Class of 2025 is off the table.
Utah Prep point guard JJ Mandaquit revealed his college commitment Tuesday afternoon, when the 6-foot-1 guard out of the Hurricane-based academy announced he has verbally committed to Washington.
An elite floor general from Hawaii, Mandaquit chose the Huskies over offers from BYU, Cal, Creighton, Hawaii, Louisville, Tennessee, USC and Virginia.
A gold medalist with USA Basketball's U17 World Cup squad, Mandaquit is the No. 3-rated prospect in the state of Utah by 247Sports and the No. 50 recruit overall by On3 Sports. He's behind only Utah Prep teammate AJ Dybantsa — the consensus No. 1 overall recruit in the country — and Wasatch Academy star Isiah Harwell, who recently committed to Houston.
The consensus four-star recruit by On3, 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals burst on the scene as a sophomore, when he moved to Utah and enrolled at the former Real Salt Lake Academy to average 15.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 22 games in 2022-23.
After RSL Basketball left the umbrella of what is now Salt Lake Academy to become Utah Prep, the youngster enrolled with Utah Prep in the Grind Session, an elite grassroots basketball circuit that plays across the country.
Now he'll head to the Pacific Northwest to play for former Utah State coach Danny Sprinkle and the Huskies.
"Coach Sprinkle has been successful everywhere he's coached and I believe in his plan for the program going forward," Mandaquit told On3. "I also believe in his vision for me within the program and his plan for me to develop individually. I feel like coach Sprinkle and the staff can help me achieve my goals as a player while in college and in the future to one day play professionally."
