AROUND THE SHIELD — Devaughn Vele's first career touchdown catch couldn't have come at a much better time for the Denver Broncos.
Unless he had another one in the second half.
The seventh-round draft pick out of the University of Utah had four catches for 39 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter that helped the Broncos to a 14-10 halftime lead over division rival Kansas City.
But the Chiefs rallied after the break, holding the Denver offense scoreless and adding a pair of Harrison Butker field goals that included the go-ahead score from 20 yards out with 5:57 left to remain undefeated with a 16-14 win.
The Broncos led by as much as 14-3 before the break, holding Patrick Mahomes and the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champions to 1-of-4 in the red zone before Mahomes found Travis Kelce for a 2-yard score with 1:44 to play before halftime.

Give Mahomes an inch, give him a mile, and the Chiefs defense did the rest. But the Broncos had one chance in the closing seconds, a 35-yard field goal attempt that would have sent Denver to 6-4 on the season and handed Kansas City its first loss at Arrowhead Stadium by the Broncos since 2015.
"It really played out exactly how we wanted it to," Broncos coach Sean Payton said after the game. "Exactly. With the ball, with the clock, with complete control of everything."
Everything, except for the kick, which Leo Chenal rushed to get a hand on Wil Lutz's try to lift the Chiefs to the 9-0 start with a fourth walk-off win.

It's the first time Andy Reid, the former BYU offensive lineman and graduate assistant now in his 26th season as an NFL head coach, has won a game with a blocked kick on the final play, he said afterward.
"We work on that block like crazy, but it doesn't normally work like that," Reid said, per ESPN.
