WEST JORDAN — A man was taken to the hospital after being shot by a West Jordan police officer overnight.

At about 1:30 a.m., police received a call and responded to a report of suicidal ideation at a home near 5600 West and 7000 South. When police arrived, they observed the man "who was carrying an edged weapon," West Jordan Sgt. Andrew Hercules said.

At one point, the man "began to run back into the house" where officers knew children were present, prompting one officer to fire his weapon, Hercules said. The man was then taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown, other than police said he has been stabilized.

Unified police have taken over the investigation due to an officer being involved.
