SALT LAKE CITY — Police are investigating a shooting that injured a 15-year-old in the West High School parking lot Thursday.
About 2 p.m., Salt Lake police received a report from a local hospital that a teenage boy had showed up with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The teenager told hospital staff someone had shot him at West High School.
After surgery, doctors confirmed the boy sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Investigators learned there may have been a "gang-nexus to the incident." Salt Lake gang detectives were called to assist the investigation and believe that about 12:15 p.m., a group of teenagers gathered in the high school parking lot.
"Many of the teenagers appeared to know each other and appeared to be involved in an ongoing conflict. At some point, someone discharged a firearm, and a bullet struck the 15-year-old," police said.
The teenagers left the parking lot in various directions, and a family member drove the 15-year-old to the hospital after he returned home injured, police said.
Investigators are working to identify the people in the parking lot during the shooting. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Salt Lake police as detectives believe there may be videos or photos that could assist the investigation.
Police believe this was an isolated incident between several teenagers, and there is no threat to the community. Additional patrols will be at the school Friday as a precaution.
