SALT LAKE CITY — A man was shot by U.S. Marshals in Salt Lake City on Monday afternoon, police said.
About 4:30 p.m., there was a large police presence near the Smith's grocery store located at 922 E. 2100 South in Salt Lake City.
Officials on scene said U.S. Marshals were assisting the state with apprehending a parole fugitive. The man allegedly crashed a car while trying to get away.
The Marshals cornered him near the Smith's, and he was shot, officials said. The man was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
The man remains in custody, Salt Lake police said, and there is no risk to the community.
Burt Brothers manager Francisco Rodriguez said he watched the incident happen. He said the man who was arrested was the ex-husband of one of his employees.
Rodriguez asked the man to leave, but he wouldn't. Shortly after, the U.S. Marshals came in and chased the man out of the Burt Brothers parking lot and down the street.
"They stopped him at the end of the road, and then the smoke bombs or something went off," Rodriguez said.
Rodriquez said he saw the man knock over a telephone pole, then shots started firing.
At 5:30 p.m., Salt Lake police announced on social media the protocol for police shootings has been activated by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Salt Lake police have been tasked with the investigation, but "we were not involved with the shooting or the events leading up to the incident," Salt Lake police added.
