OREM — Third time's the charm. That's how the saying goes, right?
For Utah Valley women's soccer, the third time is just as sweet as the first two. The Wolverines won a third consecutive WAC title after defeating WCC-bound Grand Canyon 3-0 in Orem on Monday, knotting its third title in a row and fourth in five years.
Led by senior Faith Webber — who scored her 15th and 16th goals of the season in the win — the Wolverines are a perfect 7-0 in WAC play after a roller coaster start to its season at 5-4-1.
The Wolverines beat No. 2 BYU 2-0 in an exhibition, took down Michigan on the road, and went a combined 5-1 against in-state opponents, with the only loss coming to Utah State, who was ranked as high as No. 7 in the country.
Webber has been outstanding to say the least.
She is currently second in the country in goals scored at 16, which ties the single-season goal record that she set last season at Utah Valley. Webber is also one goal behind Minnesota's Khyah Harper to lead the NCAA.
Both Webber and Harper both have one more game for the scoring title as Utah Valley faces WCC-bound Seattle U and the Gophers take on No. 11 Iowa.
The Wolverines have fallen short in the last two WAC tournaments, losing in the semifinals last year and in the final the previous season to New Mexico State.
This time, the Wolverines are determined to finish the story.
"I don't think the team is satisfied yet," head coach Chris Lemay said after the win. "We have a bit of a monkey on our back when it comes to the WAC Tournament, as we haven't won it since 2020, but we've been in a couple of finals. We need to keep pushing."
The Wolverines have already clinched the title despite there being one more regular season game, but they will open the WAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. It is currently unknown who they will face since the tournament bracket is yet to be solidified.
Their first game in the WAC Tournament will come between the No. 5 seed or the No. 4 seed and will take place on Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. MDT at Elmer Gray Stadium in Abilene, Texas.
