SALT LAKE CITY — With the spotlight shining bright amid a "Big Noon Kickoff" experience Saturday morning, BYU continued the show that afternoon with a dominating win at home over Arizona.
The Cougars continued the season's momentum Saturday en route to a 6-0 start to the season and suddenly have a potential College Football Playoff berth on the mind.
For a team that was projected to fall short of bowl eligibility for the second straight year, according to preseason odds, BYU has been one of the best team's in the country and has everything still on the table for the season.
Though head coach Kalani Sitake will preach staying in the moment — focusing next only on a home contest on Friday against Oklahoma State — the reality is BYU has the potential to have a special season.
But first, the win comes with a small jump in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings, jumping up one spot to No. 13 as the second highest-ranked team from the Big 12.
Conversely, rival Utah is going the opposite direction after dropping its second straight game of the season.
The Big 12 preseason favorite has struggled to put together an offense that can score at a regular rate, and its defense has given up more rushing yards than a traditional Kyle Whittingham-led team allows over the last two weeks.
As a result, Utah dropped completely out of the rankings, after getting as high as No. 10 before a loss to Arizona at home in Week 5. The Utes did receive votes in the latest poll, but most voters dropped the Utes.
Iowa State, which joins BYU as the only other undefeated team in the Big 12, leads the conference with a jump up to No. 9 in the latest rankings after a 12-point win on the road to West Virginia. Kansas State moved up one spot to No. 17 with a thrilling win over Colorado.
Arizona State, which is now 5-1 on the season, is receiving votes in the poll, as well as Texas Tech.
At the top of the rankings is No. 1 Texas with 56 first-place votes after a Red River Rivalry win over Oklahoma. Behind the Longhorns is No. 2 Oregon, who claimed a narrow win over Ohio State at home. The Ducks received six first-place votes as the only other team to get top bidding.
Penn State moved up one spot to No. 3 in the rankings and are followed by No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Georgia.
At the bottom of the rankings, both Army and Navy are ranked for the first time since 1960 after starting undefeated seasons.
