BUDAPEST, Hungary — IOC presidential candidate Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. has urged European lawmakers to regard investing in sport as a public health policy. It is his first keynote speech of a six-month Olympic leadership campaign involving seven candidates aiming to succeed Thomas Bach who leaves after 12 years. Samaranch is an International Olympic Committee vice president and has told delegates at the EU-backed European Week of Sport, "Sport saves lives and money." Samaranch says on Tuesday that government money for sport is "an investment in the health of our fellow human beings." About 95 IOC members will vote at a March 18-21 meeting in Greece.
